BYD has marked a significant milestone with the production of its nine millionth new energy vehicle - the Yangwang U9 supercar.
This milestone comes two months after the company produced its eight millionth NEV, a BYD Dolphin, at its Thailand plant in early July. If production continues at this pace, BYD anticipates reaching its ten or even eleven millionth NEV by the end of the year.
The U9 is Yangwang's second electric vehicle (EV), a sub-brand of BYD. It joins the lineup that features the U8 off-road SUV, along with the U7 sedan. The Yangwang U9, priced at RMB 1.68 million (approximately $239,230), is BYD’s most luxurious offering.
This two-seat electric supercar is constructed on the e4 platform and features a carbon-fiber monocoque and DiSus-X active body control suspension. Its powertrain consists of four electric motors—one for each wheel—producing 326 PS (322 hp or 240 kW) individually, resulting in a total output of 1,306 PS (1,287 hp or 960 kW) and 1,680 Nm of torque.
Equipped with an 80-kWh BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the U9 boasts a CLTC-rated range of 450 km. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds and reaches a top speed of 300 km/h.
BYD's journey started in 2008 with the introduction of its first new energy vehicle, the F3DM plug-in hybrid sedan. It took the company 13 years, until May 2021, to reach its first million vehicles with the BYD Han. However, in just over three years since that milestone, BYD has remarkably produced an additional eight million vehicles.
